There’s a lot of speculation surrounding the features, gameplay, and map of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. While Rockstar hasn’t officially confirmed the map’s layout or size, a major GTA 6 2022 leak—featuring nearly 90 video clips of early development footage—offered some clues.
The leaked GTA 6 footage suggests the game world will be set in Leonida, a fictional U.S. state, and will include areas such as Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Port Gellhorn.
Based on this, fans have created detailed concept maps. While not 100% accurate, they provide a compelling glimpse into what the final map layout might look like.
In this article, we’ll break down the most popular Grand Theft Auto games maps to highlight the differences in game world size over the years.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was released on October 27, 2002, featuring Tommy Vercetti (voiced by Ray Liotta) as the game’s sole playable character. That was over 20 years ago—how time flies!
GTA: Vice City Map Size
Land Area: 5.62km2, Water Area: 3.5 km², Total Area: 9.11 km²
The map wasn’t huge, but it certainly felt bigger at the time—especially since the western half was initially locked due to hurricane warnings, which blocked access to Starfish Island and the Vice City mainland.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas launched on October 26, 2004, introducing Carl “CJ” Johnson as the new protagonist. The game brought with it a map that was over four times larger than Vice City.
GTA: San Andreas Map Size
Land Area: 31.55 km², Water Area: 6.67 km², Total Area: 38.2 km²
The map was much larger than the previous game, featuring three major cities: Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas—each with its own style, gangs, and architecture. It also introduced rural regions like Red County, Bone County, and Whetstone, and included four airports and Mount Chiliad for the first time.
Grant Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto IV was released on April 29, 2008, and took place in Liberty City. The story follows Niko Bellic, an Eastern European ex-soldier chasing the American Dream.
GTA: IV Map Size
Land Area: 8.06 km², Water Area: 8.08 km², Total Area: 16.14 km²

The map was smaller than San Andreas focusing instead on a dense and detailed urban world divided into four main areas: Algonquin, Broker, Dukes, and Bohan.. The smaller map size meant less locations such as only a single airport and also no flyable planes or helicopters! There was also a lack of countryside areas, but the level of detail had increased substantially in all areas, you can’t have it all!
Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V launched on September 17, 2013, and introduced three playable protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, each with unique stories and abilities.
GTA V Map Size
Land Area: 48.15 km², Water Area: 27.69 km², Total Area: 75.84 km²

Grand Theft Auto V reintroduced multiple airports and a wide variety of locations—urban, rural, and countryside—alongside more enterable buildings and a significantly higher level of detail throughout the map. The world is divided into two main regions: Los Santos and Blaine County, each containing numerous distinct areas inspired by real-world locations. Notable examples include Vespucci Beach (based on Venice Beach), Rockford Hills (Beverly Hills), and Del Perro (Santa Monica), among many others.
Grand Theft Auto VI
Grand Theft Auto VI still doesn’t have an official release date, but thanks to leaks, we know the setting will be Leonida—a fictional state inspired by Florida, known for its beaches, theme parks, sunny climate, and the busiest port in the world.
GTA 6 Estimated Map Size
Current estimates suggest the new map will be approximately 2 to 2.5 times the size of the GTA V map, putting it somewhere between 125 km² and 200 km². That’s a massive area to explore—making it the largest open-world map in any Rockstar game to date!

Likely regions include an expanded Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers (a swampy area), Ambrosia (industrial), Mount Kalaga National Park, and Port Gellhorn.
Keep in mind this is based on concept maps and unverified leaks—the final version could look very different. Still, it’s exciting to imagine what could be the largest open-world map Rockstar ever created.
